It looks like we could have three or four horses trying to go forward here. Ilovethenightlife, It’s Easy, Loud And Proud and Malaita have all attempted to make the running in at least two of their last four starts. Because of that, I’m looking away from the likely front-runners and siding with something that’ll be ridden a bit more patiently.

I’ve landed on Regal Renaissance for Henry Daly. He’s a three-time winner over hurdles and has one win over fences — that chase win coming at Warwick last November, a track that, like Bangor, is left-handed and sharp. He’s also won twice over slightly further than today’s trip, so if this turns into a testing race (and it easily could), he’s got the stamina to handle it.

There’s a lot to like about this horse. He tends to save his best for runs after a long break, he prefers going left-handed, and he’s a previous course-and-distance winner — and that was off a higher mark than he runs from today. He’s also likely to try and make all in a race where there doesn’t seem to be much pressure for the lead.

Back down to a mark of 131 today, and if he gets an uncontested lead, he could be very hard to pass.

This horse has run at Newcastle four times and won three of them. What I really like is how versatile he is tactically — he can race right on the pace when things are steady early, or sit midfield if they go a good gallop.

He’s returning from a 238-day break, but that doesn’t worry me. The yard is in great form, and he’s already shown he can win fresh after a long layoff.
