Three Teams We Believe Can Make It Out of Their World Cup Groups
Not everyone wants to sit through the full preview, so if you're simply looking for the selections, we're backing Mexico to win Group A, USA to win Group D, and Scotland to qualify from Group C. Click the button underneath this paragraph to add these 3 selections straight to your bet365 bet slip.
Below, we'll explain why those three nations appeal from a betting perspective.
Tournament football is never easy to predict, but group stages are often decided by organisation, momentum and taking advantage of favourable circumstances. That's why we're siding with Mexico and the United States to top their respective groups, while Scotland are fancied to make it through to the knockout stages.
Each team arrives with different strengths. Mexico and the USA both benefit from home support, while Scotland possess the structure and resilience needed to upset more talented sides over three games.
Mexico Can Top Group A On Home Soil
Mexico look well placed not only to qualify but to finish top of Group A.
Before their disappointment in Qatar four years ago, El Tri had reached the knockout stages in seven consecutive World Cups between 1994 and 2018. Few nations have been as consistently reliable in group-stage football.
They begin against South Africa in Mexico City before facing South Korea and Czechia. Home advantage could prove huge. Familiar surroundings, reduced travel and passionate support often make a difference in tight tournament matches.
Mexico also know what it takes to perform when hosting. They reached the quarter-finals when staging the tournament in both 1970 and 1986 and should once again be comfortable in the spotlight.
Javier Aguirre has built a side around control and experience rather than flair. Edson Álvarez provides balance in midfield, Raúl Jiménez remains a proven goalscorer and veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa brings a wealth of World Cup experience.
They're unlikely to blow teams away, but they don't have to. In tournament football, efficiency often counts for more than entertainment, and Mexico look strong favourites to top Group A.
Scotland Can Reach The Knockout Stages
Scotland face a much tougher task, but we're backing Steve Clarke's men to do enough to qualify.
Their first World Cup appearance since 1998 has generated huge excitement and the Tartan Army will travel in huge numbers. Drawn alongside Haiti, Morocco and Brazil, few expect Scotland to dominate games, but that could actually suit them.
Under Clarke, Scotland know exactly what they are. They are organised, disciplined and extremely difficult to break down. Those qualities often become invaluable in tournament football where margins are fine.
They don't need to finish above Brazil. They simply need to take care of business against Haiti and pick up something from Morocco.
Andy Robertson, John McGinn and Scott McTominay provide leadership and experience, while Che Adams gives them a focal point in attack. More importantly, Scotland are built around collective effort rather than individual stars.
The key will be game management. Stay compact, defend properly and take chances when they come, and there is enough in this group to believe Scotland can sneak into the knockout stages.
USA Can Win Group D
The USA are our pick to top Group D.
Mauricio Pochettino has inherited arguably the deepest squad the country has ever taken into a World Cup. Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, Sergiño Dest, Gio Reyna, Folarin Balogun and Ricardo Pepi provide quality throughout the side.
The opening match against Paraguay feels particularly important. Get three points there and momentum could quickly build before meetings with Australia and a European play-off winner.
One of America's biggest strengths is versatility. They can press aggressively, dominate possession or attack quickly through wide areas depending on the opposition.
They've reached the knockout stages in three of their last five World Cups and this current generation is entering its prime years.
Pulisic brings creativity, McKennie and Adams supply energy and control, while Robinson and Dest offer attacking threat from full-back. Combined with home support and the influence of Pochettino, the USA look capable of winning Group D and potentially making a deeper run than many expect.
Why These Three Stand Out
What links Mexico, Scotland and the USA is that all three have realistic objectives and a clear identity.
Mexico have the experience and home advantage to top Group A. The USA possess the squad depth and backing of home crowds to do likewise in Group D. Scotland, meanwhile, have shown under Steve Clarke that organisation and resilience can bridge the gap against more talented teams.
Group football rarely rewards flashy football. More often, it rewards structure, discipline and teams that know exactly who they are.
And in a tournament decided by fine margins, those qualities can be worth their weight in gold.
Our Picks
Mexico to win Group A @ 8/11
USA to win Group D @ 11/8
Scotland to qualify from Group C @ 4/11
The combined odds are currently 4.59/1 which would return approximately £111.80 from a £20 stake, although prices are subject to change.
